Day 2. Miami ritual, starting the day with a brisk walk on the beach with our Detroit friend, Christine Schefman and yogurt parfait and coffee from the Fountainbleau. It's a beautiful thing!
We were off and running, visiting both the Rubell Family Collection and the De La Cruz Collection before lunch. The Rubell Family Collection featured an exhibition titled "28 Chinese" that occupied the entire building and was the culmination of the Rubell's six research trips to China over 11 years, visiting over 100 artists' studios but first there was Jennifer Rubell's annual breakfast/food/art project. This year she explored the cultural benefits of Chinese egg custard tarts in a piece titled, "Faith" in which hundreds of tarts were served on a giant teeter/totter.

Joseph Beuys Meets Chairman Mao. East Meets West seemed to be a recurring theme of the exhibition.

Huang Yong Ping's "Well." While born in China Ping lives in Paris and sites Duchamp and Beuys as great influences. The traditional Chinese urn with the surprising contents are quite possibly a metaphor for cultural isolation in China.
We came away feeling that contemporary Chinese artists are very much concerned with globalization, East Meets West, Chinese culural history and how it meshes with western art history, and the egg tarts were a real treat!
