Art Marathon: New York

In what can only be described as a marathon, on a recent trip to New York, the Art Girls visited three museums in one day.  We started our day at MOMA to feast our eyes on the beautiful cut outs of Henri Matisse.  MOMA boasts this exhibition as the largest and most extensive presentation of the cut-outs ever mounted along with his monumental cut-out The Swimming Pool, (1952) created for Matisse's home in Nice, France.  Not only was the exhibition fantastic, we had an unbelievable celebrity sighting as well. (No photos allowed but I managed to snap one quick one before being reprimanded.)

The Swimming Pool, as seen today and yesterday.

Next stop, the Neue Galerie for a very moving exhibition of portraits by Egon Shiele.

Last we headed to the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum for Death Becomes Her: A Century of Mourning Attire.  The exhibition explores the impact of high fashion on the bereavement rituals as they evolved from the 19th through 20th centuries.  I know it sounds a bit morbid but the clothes were really beautiful - and everyone knows, the Art Girls love black!

Before our feet gave out, we took a stroll through the beautiful autumn colors of Central Park - quite the treat for these California girls.

(I think Matisse would have loved these yellow trees.)
