Color, Light and Skyspace; Maxwell Hendler & James Turrell

First stop was to Texas Gallery to visit legendary dealer Fredericka Hunter and to see the Maxwell Hendler exhibition of color saturated, resin-poured monochromes. This is the first exhibition for this Houston native in his hometown.

At sunset we experienced the latest "Skyspace" installation by James Turrell at Rice University. A Skyspace is an enclosed room large enough for at least 15 people. Inside, the viewers sit on benches along the edge to view the sky through an opening in the roof. As a lifelong Quaker, Turrell designed the Live Oak Meeting House for the Society of Friends, with an opening or skyhole in the roof, wherein the notion of light takes on a decidedly religious connotation and a skyspace a sort of religious meeting place.
