Since 1975, the Kazuri Bead Factory (kazuri means "small and beautiful" in Swahili) has employed single, disadvantaged women (and a few men) to craft beautiful ceramic beads, which are made into necklaces, bracelets, earrings and other items. We toured the small factory, learned about the labor- and time-intensive process of making the beads and pottery, and watched some of the talented artisans in action shaping and decorating the handmade treasures. On our tour, we learned that the company provides health care for its 300+ employees. The business has grown substantially in recent years, distributing jewelry and loose beads to countries as far and wide as Australia, the Netherlands and the United States.
After the tour, we went shopping (all proceeds supporting the amazing artisans of Kazuri)!
